CHILLBLAINS

Chilblains, also known as pernio, are small, inflamed patches of skin that can appear after exposure to cold or damp air. They are usually red or bluish, and may feel itchy, tender, or painful.

TRENCH FOOT

Trench foot is caused by prolonged exposure to a cold temperature that is usually above freezing and damp, sometimes unsanitary conditions. The condition ultimately causes skin and tissue breakdown which increases the risk of infection and increases associated morbidity and mortality.

Signs and Symptoms

Early symptoms include
  • Feeling cold
  • Uncontrollable shivering
  • Pale skin
As it progresses, other symptoms may include
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Fumbling hands
  • Unsteady gait
  • Slurred speech
  • Slowed breathing
  • Weak pulse
  • Low blood pressure
In severe cases, symptoms may include
  • Slowed or absent heartbeat
  • Dilated pupils
  • Rigid and stiff muscles
  • Skin that feels ice cold and appears blue
  • Slow, shallow, or absent breathing
  • Coma
  • Person may appear dead

How to Treat

  • Seek medical help
  • Move to a warm place
  • Remove wet clothing
  • Warm the body
  • Provide warm drinks
  • Stay with them

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Patches of skin in shades of red, white, blue, gray, purple or brown. The color of affected skin depends on how serious the frostbite is and the usual skin color.
  • Cold, hard, waxy-looking skin
  • Clumsiness due to joint stiffness
  • Pain
  • Blistering after rewarming

How to Treat

  • Seek immediate medical attention
  • Protect the area
  • Warm the area gradually
  • Bandage the area
  • Take medicine
  • Repeat

  • Chilblains often get better on their own within a week or two without treatment. Here are some home remedies that may help

    • Soothe itching
    • Rewarm slowly
    • Keep warm
    • Improve circulation
    • Avoid cold exposure

  • Trench foot can be treated by keeping your feet dry and warm, resting and elevating the affected foot, you can also try these home treatments
