We are in an age where innovation is accelerating all around us. Think about it; Ten
years ago, rear projection TV's were still available for sale. Twelve years ago, many
people were still using 3.5” floppy disks to save or transfer their work on their
computer. Fifteen years ago, we weren't even able to text on our cell phones.
Yet, with all of the innovation taking place around us, there are still certain
products where change is strongly resisted for one reason or another. At the forefront
is personal protective equipment (PPE). Why? Because it's personal.
That being said, improvement is not possible without change. This is true whether it
applies to protection, performance, comfort, and/or function.
Let's look at recent hard hat design innovations for example. PIP offers the JSP®
Evolution® hard hat in addition to other, more traditional head protection
solutions. When comparing the Evolution® hard hat to commonly used hard hat
designs from the 1970's, there is a clear visual difference between the two. And it's
the visual difference of the Evolution® that tells the story.
Start with the front of the hard hat, and more specifically the brim. The brim on the
Evolution® is not as low on the worker's head and has a very slight taper. This
differs significantly as compared to the traditional style hard hat, which tapers
downward much more noticeably. By changing the position and the taper of the brim, the
Evolution® provides the worker with a greater field of vision, especially above
the worker's eye line.
As we continue to the back of the hard hat, notice the extended deflection area on
both the side and back of the head. This helps provide coverage to sensitive areas on
the head that would otherwise be exposed. Again, this is a noticeable difference as
compared to the traditional style hard hat, which is relatively flat from front-to-
back.
At the back of the hard hat, the Evolution® features a deep lower nape strap. This
provides the worker a more secure fit, helping keep the hard hat stay in place even
when looking down or bending over. The size adjustment on the traditional style hard
hat is positioned higher on the worker's head, making it easier to move around on the
worker's head and potentially fall off.
Every detail and design change of the JSP® Evolution® hard hat is in place to
provide enhanced protection, performance, comfort, and/or function. So, while it may
not look like a traditional hard hat, it's designed to outperform them in every way
that matters.
